Official ARU definition
One ARU (Attempt Recovery Unit) is consumed when a recovery attempt reaches a confirmed completed outcome, whether successful or unsuccessful. This is the authoritative definition used by the Recoupant metering system.

What consumes an ARU
Only a completed recovery attempt consumes an ARU. A completed attempt is one that has reached a terminal outcome: Recovered, Partially Recovered, or Unsuccessful. Each completed attempt consumes exactly one ARU, regardless of the outcome.
What does NOT consume an ARU
The following do NOT consume ARUs: running a revenue scan, AI analysis and verification, opportunity detection, authorizing an opportunity, pending or in-progress attempts, AI chat interactions with any assistant, browsing the Knowledge Center or Learning Center, and syncing integrations.
Idempotent consumption
ARU consumption is idempotent — the same recovery attempt can never consume two ARUs, even if the system processes duplicate webhooks or retries. Each attempt has a unique idempotency key that prevents double-counting.
Important Notes
- One ARU = one completed recovery attempt, whether successful or unsuccessful.
- Scanning, analysis, AI chat, and pending attempts are all free — they never consume ARUs.
